Science, Power, and Consequence: Oppenheimer at Altrincham Garrick Playhouse
The Altrincham Garrick Playhouse proudly presents Oppenheimer, a gripping historical drama by Tom Morton-Smith, running from the 24th February. Directed by John Cunningham with Associate Direction by Carole Carr, this compelling production explores the extraordinary life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the American physicist whose work on the Manhattan Project led to the development of the atomic bomb.

Oppenheimer is more than a story of scientific discovery; it is a deeply human narrative about ambition, power, and the moral dilemmas of innovation. Audiences will witness Oppenheimer’s journey from an intellectually gifted but socially awkward scientist to the influential and conflicted figure at the centre of one of history’s most significant—and devastating—scientific breakthroughs. The play delves into his relationships with colleagues, his romantic entanglements, and the intense scrutiny he faced from the government and the scientific community.
Set against the backdrop of World War II, the play opens in 1939 as fascism sweeps across Europe and scientists in California begin to understand the destructive potential of atomic fission. As the U.S. government races to build the bomb before its enemies, Oppenheimer finds himself leading a team of brilliant minds at Los Alamos. But as victory approaches, so does the realization of the catastrophic consequences of their work.
Originally written for the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2015, Oppenheimer offers a thought-provoking examination of scientific responsibility, ethics, and the unintended outcomes of technological advancement. With an engaging narrative that blends historical fact with emotional depth, the play challenges audiences to consider the lasting impact of decisions made in the pursuit of knowledge and power.
