Cactus + Coffee to launch in Altrincham
Independent plant shop Cactus + Coffee is sprouting up as part of an exciting new chapter for Goose Green in the heart of Altrincham’s town centre. The body and mind focused plant cafe will specialise in cactii and succulents whilst also providing outdoor plants, cut flowers, home and gift items, hot and cold sandwiches, seasonal soups, cakes and great coffee, all centred around the feel-good factor of foliage.
Manager Carlos Carriera says, “We hope by offering a seat amongst the plants you’ll get a feel for them and which you like. Pair this with a sandwich, nutritional soup and a proper barista coffee – you’ll feel calm and comfortable. We’re an everyday spot for lunch, as well as a place to a get a reasonably priced Aloe Vera. We also have seating inside at the back, ideal for meetings or solo workers.”
This innovative initiative links with the positive mental health effects of soil and plants. Chloe McTernan, brain child of Cactus + Coffee, says, “Getting your hands dirty in the garden or in a pot can increase your serotonin levels, making you relaxed and happier. Contact with a specific soil bacterium, Mycobacterium vaccae, triggers the release of serotonin in our brain. Particular plants can also purify the air in your home and can reduce damp. We’ll have a potting-on area if you want to put the plant in the pot you’ve just bought.”
Cactus + Coffee wants to encourage small businesses in the community to put their products on the shelf. If you haven’t been approached by them, drop them a line or some samples. Says proprietor James Gill, “Were all about collaboration – plants improve us, we nurture them, plus we’d love to sell things for local growers and makers too.”
It would be easy to assume that there are enough cafes in Altrincham, but as anyone knows who’s tried to get a table anywhere decent between nine and two, the town’s insatiable desire to wolf down artisan bread and caffeine products is not yet quenched. In fact the cafe culture you might say is the very essence of Altrincham. Putting this café culture in relaxing, foliage-filled surroundings where you can purchase the décor, we can’t help but think this savvy combo could be a real grower!
