To kick-off the amazing Autumn programme of art exhibitions at Inch Arts, The Gallery at Inch in Altrincham, is extremely privileged to host the first UK solo show by London-based emerging fine artist, Abi Joy Samuel. Abi was the well-deserved winner of the recent highly regarded ‘Together’ exhibition at Inch Arts, as chosen by TV presenter, artist and independent curator, Diana Ali.

The show is entitled, “Figures in motion: The Human Experience in Layers”, which will run from 9th- 30th September. Abi explained her inspiration:

“What if everyone from the day they were born had one piece of paper assigned to them and for each experience they had, a drawing was made, one on top of the other, creating a complete visual impression of the complexity of human existence?

In this solo exhibition, I present to you a new body of work made up of heavily layered charcoal and pastel drawings on paper of the human form. Elaborate in scale and composition, the foundation of this project starts with the large-scale pieces, with ‘Sofa’ and ‘Three Figures’ being the firsts.”

Diana Ali explained why she chose Abi as the winner of the ‘Together’ exhibition, “I think their piece really had a connection for me. In the past few years, all we’ve been through, everything had been really blurred. We’ve not really had a cohesive journey in life, and I think this piece really captures that because it’s blurry. It’s misty. It’s foggy. We can’t really fully identify the two figures, but what I love is the suggestion, the closeness of the two figures holding each other and having support for each other.”

Ruth Fildes, Gallery and Exhibitions Manager Inch Arts describes Abi’s winning work, “The first prize for the Together exhibition was quite rightly won by Abi for their absolutely breath-taking and deeply personal emotive drawing, on monumental and arresting scale. What an impact and affect the work has, simply outstanding!

“The September exhibition’s celebratory opening evening will take place on Friday 9th September (7-9pm), and we are thrilled that Abi is coming up from London to open their show personally that evening. The show will run throughout September, finishing on Friday 30th. We have not seen an exhibition like this in the north-west, it is certainly one not to be missed”.

The vast majority of the works will be for sale. For more information, please email: ruth@inch-arts.co.uk
