Altrincham Garrick Playhouse Launches New Season with Alan Bennett’s Iconic Comedy, The History Boys

Altrincham Garrick Playhouse is thrilled to announce the opening production of its new season, Alan Bennett’s celebrated play, The History Boys. Directed by Su Mowat, this endearing production will run from 16th to 21st September 2024, bringing to life one of the most acclaimed and beloved British plays of the last two decades.

Set in the 1980s, The History Boys follows a group of bright, funny, and unruly sixth-form students as they navigate the trials of adolescence in pursuit of sex, sport, and a place at university. At the heart of the story is a battle of wits between their unconventional and maverick English teacher, who believes in the transformative power of education, and a sharp, young supply teacher with a more pragmatic approach. Overseeing the chaos is the school’s headmaster, whose obsession with results and league tables adds fuel to the staffroom rivalry and the students’ rebellious energy.

Through its rich blend of humour, wit, and poignant reflections on the purpose of education, The History Boys poses universal questions about the nature of history and its teaching, all while offering a sharp commentary on the education system that remains strikingly relevant today. Although the students’ A Levels may be behind them, their real journey of learning and self-discovery is only just beginning.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary, The History Boys first premiered at the National Theatre in 2004, where it was met with rave reviews and quickly became a sell-out sensation. Hailed as “one of the finest plays Alan Bennett has ever written,” the production went on to win over 30 major awards, including the Olivier and Tony Awards for Best New Play. The play’s enduring appeal was recently underscored when it was voted the nation’s favourite play in a national survey.

Director Su Mowat, is set to bring a fresh perspective to this iconic work. Audiences can expect a production that is both faithful to Bennett’s original vision and resonant with contemporary themes.

Don’t miss the chance to experience this comic masterpiece on the Altrincham Garrick stage. Tickets are now on sale and are expected to sell quickly.
