A Family Unravels: Florian Zeller’s The Son comes to the Garrick

Altrincham Garrick Playhouse presents The Son, Florian Zeller’s devastating and deeply human exploration of adolescence, family breakdown, and the silences that grow inside them — running in the Garrick Studio from Tuesday 22nd to Sunday 27th September.
“I don’t know what’s happened… But something has. He’s changed.”
Seventeen year old Nicolas has been withdrawing since his parents’ divorce — skipping school, lying, shutting himself away. Unable to settle with his mother, he moves in with his father and his new young family, hoping a change of scene might be the fresh start he needs.
But what if it isn’t enough? What then?

The Son is the final instalment in Zeller’s celebrated trilogy, following The Mother and The Father, the latter staged to acclaim on the Garrick Mainstage in 2024. All three plays are translated by Christopher Hampton, whose work brings Zeller’s precise, unsettling emotional clarity into English.
Since premiering at London’s Kiln Theatre in 2019 before transferring to the Duke of York’s, The Son has gone on to reach an even wider audience through Zeller’s own 2022 film adaptation, starring Hugh Jackman, Vanessa Kirby and Anthony Hopkins.

Directed by Jonathan Barker, this production forms part of the Garrick Studio’s 26/27 Season, A Season of Connection: stories that bind us, break us, and bring us back together and asks audiences to sit with one of the hardest truths any family can face: sometimes love isn’t enough to see what’s really happening to the person right in front of you.
